Most people think of breathwork as something you do in a yoga class or a meditation app. What they don’t realize is that your breathing pattern directly governs your nervous system — and your nervous system directly governs how your body performs, recovers, and adapts to training.

Getting your breath right might be the highest-leverage thing you can do for your health and fitness — and it costs nothing.

The Nervous System Connection

Your autonomic nervous system has two primary states: sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest). Modern life — constant stress, poor sleep, screens, noise, deadlines — keeps most people locked in a chronic sympathetic state. Their body is always on, always braced, always ready for a threat that isn’t coming.

Breathing is the only autonomic function you can consciously control. That makes it a direct lever on your nervous system state. Slow, deep, nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic system. Fast, shallow, mouth breathing reinforces sympathetic dominance. Most people breathe in the second pattern all day without knowing it.

What This Means for Your Training

If you’re training in a chronically stressed state, your body is not in an optimal environment for building muscle, burning fat, or recovering between sessions. Cortisol stays elevated. Sleep quality suffers. Inflammation doesn’t clear efficiently. You work hard but the results don’t match the effort.

Intentional breathwork before, during, and after training shifts your nervous system into a state where adaptation actually happens. You get more out of less. Recovery improves. And you start feeling better between sessions, not just after them.

Breathwork Techniques That Work

There are many breathwork modalities — box breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, nasal breathing protocols, extended exhale techniques — each with slightly different effects on the nervous system. The key is learning which technique fits which situation and building the habit of breath awareness into your daily routine.

This is something Jeremy Mavraides teaches as a core component of every Maverick Mind Body Coaching session. Whether you’re working on strength, mobility, or mind-body alignment, breath is the thread running through all of it.
